Bioshock (PS4) Review 

As many of you already know, I occasionally review games on here. I don’t review every game but mostly the games that are story based and more along the lines of cinematic storytelling. Bioshock is a game that I’ve been told by many people that I need to experience and have been meaning to get to it. I finally bucked up and picked up the Bioshock Collection on PS4 which houses the 3 games, Bioshock, Bioshock 2 and Bioshock: Infinite, along with all their DLC add ons. I obviously started with the original, Bioshock I’m so happy to say that everyone who told me to play this was so so right. Bioshock is one of the most immersive and unique gaming experiences I’ve ever had. The production design alone makes this game worth a playthrough but what really sucks you in is the creepy atmosphere and wonderful story that slowly reveals each layer and has a few twists and turns that really stunned me. I had a lot of trouble putting this game down and for good measure. This is one of the best gaming experiences I’ve had ever.


Bioshock opens up with an airplane crash into the Atlantic Ocean. You play as Jack, a man you seemly know nothing about except that he has a family that is told to you in the electrifying opening scene that immediately pulled me in. As Jack swims to a lighthouse, he finds a elevator and dives down to the city of Rapture, an underwater city created by the millionaire Andrew Ryan. When Jack arrives however, he realizes there’s a lot of eerie things going on in this palace and fights to survive and escape this seemingly inescapable city.


I said the introduction was fantastic but really the entire first act is amazing. There’s only a handful of games that I can name with seemingly perfect introductions and this is among the top of that list. The atmosphere, the tension, the paranoia are spectacular. The first time you’re introduced to Rapture feels like the scene from welcome to Jurassic Park scene from Jurassic Park. It is truly breathtaking and goosebump inducing and for a game originally released in 2007, this game still is a technical marvel. The game holds up very well and while it’s obviously aged, it’s aged well.


The voice acting is stellar in this game too. While you see a few characters in the game, a lot of the game relies on voice over through a radio and it sounds fantastic. I bought into every role. The game also feels like the 1950s even if it has a lot of Sci-Fi elements to it. Like the way Alien feels with its low-fi, this game has that same kind of feel.


The only negative that I have with the game is the last 25 minutes. The final boss fight while challenging at first is a die and then figure out the routine to killing him. It ultimately became the easiest portion of the game. Then after that, I wasn’t a big fan of the wrap up of the game. It was once I found out that there are two different endings to the game that I realized I got the bad ending and actually was punished for my choices in the game. Still, the choice I made made the ending I got seem really really overblown and kind of made it not make sense. It’s not that the ending is bad but it was just underwhelming for the last 11 hours I played. Also, when you die, you just revive at a chamber and can ultimately perserver through the game and it kind of hurts the challenge of the game.


Ending aside, Bioshock is one of the greatest gaming experiences I’ve ever had. The production design, atmosphere, voice-acting and story (save for the ending) is among the coolest and most investing I’ve ever experienced. If you’re like me and waited an entire decade to play this game, go play it now. You won’t regret it.
