Kumail Nanjiani is a comedian who came up with some of my favorite comedians and is best friends with Pete Holmes. Kumail wrote this movie back in 2012 but didn’t find anyone to buy the script until 2015. Judd Apatow is the man who is bringing Nanjiani into the bright lights and gave this underrated comic his time to shine.
The movie is based on a true story about one of his relationships and being a person of color looking for love in modern America. It has a great cast, with Ray Romano really putting in a great performance and Kumail being witty as ever.
What I’m most excited for is how Apatow has helped three of the best comedians working into prime time positions to be entertainments next big thing. He produced Kumail’s movie above, he helped create and produce Pete Holmes HBO show Crashing which I highly recommend. Apatow is also producing Chris Gethard’s HBO special airing tomorrow night. I’ll have an post with Gethard’s greatest hits later today.
This podcast above is really amazing. Back in 2012, Pete Holmes had a live taping of his podcast You Made It Weird at South By SouthWest festival. His guest included none other than Kumail Nanjiani, Chris Gethard and Judd Apatow. Pretty amazing that all three of them would be sharing the stage all at once and then 5 years later, all of their breakout works would be interconnected
